An Iowa City man was charged with OWI after hitting a traffic sign Thursday night.

According to arrest reports, 46-year-old Todd Farrell of Wakefield Court was observed by a police detective strike a traffic sign at the corner of South Gilbert and Highway 6 a little after 9:30 pm.

Farrell allegedly continued on without stopping and officers stopped him eastbound on Highway 6 at Taylor Drive. He reportedly smelled of ingested alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot watery eyes. Farrell reportedly said that he had been drinking at the Deadwood downtown.

After failing field tests, he submitted to a PBT showing that he was over the legal blood alcohol limit, and a subsequent Datamaster showed his level at .296.

Farrell was charged with his first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.
