The head coach behind Muscatine’s recent boys basketball success is taking over the Regina program.

School officials announced Thursday that Gary Belger, a Regina alumnus & Hall of Fame member, will take over for the 2020-21 season, pending approval from the school board.

Belger has a 629-281 career record, taking three schools to the state tournament during his career. He is one of eight coaches in the history of Iowa High School basketball to accomplish that feat.

Belger has extensive experience with Catholic high schools including: Cardinal Stritch (Keokuk, IA), Bishop Moore (Orlando, FL), and Father Lopez (Daytona Beach, FL). He coached current University of Iowa standout Joe Weiskamp while taking Muscatine to the state tournament in 2018.

“Coach Belger’s experience, coaching pedigree, and understanding of Regina is unparalleled,” said Regina Activities Director Bryce Smeins. “We feel fortunate to have him coming back home to lead our student-athletes.”

Belger replaces Jared Galpin.
