A Tiffin man with several felonies was taken into custody after being discovered with a stolen gun.
Police were in Oxford Monday afternoon before 2pm to serve a warrant at a residence on West Main Street. 33-year-old Derik Otero of Iris Avenue was located in a bathroom and was asked to exit the room.
Arrest reports indicate that Otero eventually complied, but police heard clanking sounds from behind the closed door before he opened it. A subsequent search of the bathroom allegedly turned up a loaded Smith and Wesson handgun in an air vent.
A witness on the scene also told police that they saw the outline of a handgun in the back of Otero’s shirt prior to deputies coming to the residence.
A check of Otero’s criminal records indicated that he had several prior felony convictions, and Otero himself admitted to being a convicted felon. A check of the gun’s serial number showed it having been stolen, according to the Bettendorf Police.
Otero was taken into custody and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, and 4th Degree Theft. If convicted, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
