Protesters made a final stop at a city councilor’s home Monday night ahead of tonight’s special meeting to discuss the Iowa Freedom Riders’ demands.

After previously marching to the homes of Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague and councilors John Thomas and Pauline Taylor, the demonstrators made it to the home of Susan Mims.

The Daily Iowan reports that Mims was unwilling to agree to implement all 12 demands that the Iowa Freedom Riders have made, saying she will not support immediately defunding the Iowa City Police Department. Eventually, she told the gathering that she would take action on all of their demands, either long or short term. Mims added that she was disappointed with the structure of the emergency City Council meeting held last Tuesday, and vowed to “do better” Tuesday night.

On the way back to the Pentacrest, the group formed a circle at the intersection of Clinton and Burlington Streets at about 10:45pm, chanting, “If we can’t get no justice, then y’all can’t get no sleep.”

The DI reports that the group walked almost 7 miles in total Monday night.

No demonstrations are scheduled now through Thursday; the group says if they’re not satisfied with the results of tonight’s City Council meeting, they will protest again Friday.
