A Des Moines man who has had multiple drug possession charges was taken into custody early Monday after police discovered drugs strewn about his car after a traffic stop.

According to police, a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle going 88 miles an hour in a 70 mile per hour zone on Interstate 80 East near Tiffin. He followed the vehicle, driven by 28-year-old James Reinier, and paced him at 77 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour construction zone. Reinier pulled into the Kum & Go in Coralville just off the exit just after midnight and was contacted by the deputy.

A check of Reinier’s records showed his driving status in Iowa as suspended. Multiple pills were allegedly spread out throughout the vehicle that Reinier stated was Xanax. Also reportedly found were a bottle of pills that didn’t belong to Reinier, a meth pipe, and a marijuana blunt.

Reinier has at least three previous possession convictions in Polk County, in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

He was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, 3rd or subsequent, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on both counts, Reinier could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
