Iowa City’s Riverside Theatre is looking for a new home.

According to a news release on the theatre’s web site, the group will leave its home on 213 N. Gilbert Street at the expiration of its current lease, June 30, 2020. Riverside’s staff is planning a season of virtual performances and community partnerships in the near term, while searching for a new permanent home.

Riverside Theatre was founded in 1981, starting with performances at Old Brick on East Market Street. It moved to its current home in the Gilpin’s Paint and Glass building in 1990.

Riverside officials say they’re beginning a search for a new permanent home in downtown Iowa City, which it hopes to have secured by fall 2021. Riverside will be in residence at other venues on a show-by-show basis once live performances resume.

More details of the 2020-21 40th Anniversary Season will be revealed on June 14th during “Sweatpants and Slippers”, a virtual gala featuring performances by Patrick DuLaney and Chris Okiishi. An update on Free Shakespeare in Lower City Park will be released soon.

The production of A Doll’s House, Part 2, which was originally scheduled for April and moved to July due to COVID-19 concerns, will be cancelled. Ticket holders will be contacted by phone and email to discuss their options.
