A handful of local schools are up for a state award that honors them for registering at least 90% of eligible students to vote.
In a release from Paul Pate, Iowa Secretary of State, he announced that 18 schools qualified for the Carrie Chapman Catt Award. Pate created the award last September to encourage voter registration in high schools.
Area schools who made the grade include Lone Tree High School and Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. They will be honored during a formal trophy ceremony at a later date.
Additionally, Clear Cerek Amana High School and Mid-Prairie High School got over 50% of their eligible students registered to vote, and will receive a certificate from Pate’s office.
The award is named after an Iowa woman who successfully fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote.
