Two medical marijuana companies based in Iowa are competing to open a new dispensary in Coralville.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that MedPharm Iowa of Des Moines and Iowa Cannabis Company of Waterloo have applied for a medical cannabidiol dispensary licence in the city with the state Department of Public Health.
MedPharm is the only licensed manufacturer of cannabis products in the state; Iowa Cannabis Company operates a dispensary in Waterloo.
The Gazette reports that each applicant has a letter of support from city leaders; Mayor John Lundell for MedPharm and City Administrator Kelly Hayworth for Iowa Cannabis. Both say they have no preference for which company gets the license.
Lucas Nelson of MedPharm says his company is interested in Coralville because “it’s got a population we know is interested in medical cannabis.”
Two licenses are open in the state after closures in Davenport and Council Bluffs this year.
