An Iowa City transient was taken into custody after a shoplifting incident early Thursday.
According to arrest reports, 41-year-old George Floyd was called in by staff at the Suburban BP on Keokuk Street around 12:30am as a shoplifter. As an officer arrived on scene, staff pointed Floyd out as the alleged shoplifter, and he made contact with Floyd.
Although the officer ordered Floyd to stop, he reportedly continued walking away. Floyd had allegedly stolen a six-pack of beer; he set it down, walked away but then returned to retrieve it. The officer grabbed Floyd’s arm, and a skirmish ensued.
Floyd is accused of throwing his elbows back in an effort to strike the officer, and hit him in the right forearm. He tried walking away again, ignoring commands, and took a combative stance with police. He had to be tazed to be subdued.
Floyd was charged with 5th degree Theft, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, Floyd could be sentenced to up to 14 months in jail.
