At a Tuesday press conference, representatives from all three Iowa City hospitals say they’re prepared if the area sees a second wave of coronavirus cases as the economy starts to reopen.
Chief Medical Officer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Dr. Theresa Brennan, says she’s seen the partial lifting of restrictions giving some people the idea that the pandemic is over. She says that staying masked and keeping social distancing measures in place should be a part of daily life for a long time.
At the Iowa City VA Hospital, Veterans Affairs Health Care System Director Judy Johnson-Mekota has not yet started elective procedures like UIHC and Mercy, but are looking into that possibility. They’re currently treating five patients for COVID 19 and have a drive-up testing facility set up for veterans.
Mercy Iowa City public information officer Margaret Reese said Tuesday that the facility is on high alert for the potential of more positive cases as the area reopens. She also encouraged residents to continue following precautions to reduce the spread of coronavirus until a reliable vaccine is available.
