A Muscatine County jail administrator is on temporary leave after making anti-Muslim and anti-gay remarks.

Muscatine County Sheriff C.J. Ryan confirmed Friday that administrator Dean Naylor was placed on leave pending an internal investigation. Earlier this month, Iowa Capital Dispatch reported that Naylor posted remarks on You Tube and social media saying that Muslims are “pawns to the devil”, are at war with Christians and Jews, worship Satan unknowingly, and would kill anyone who doesn’t believe in Islam.

Naylor also wrote that he considered “the gay lifestyle” “an abomination.”

Officials in Johnson County, including Johnson County Supervisors and Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek, called for Naylor’s removal. Johnson County houses overflow inmates in Muscatine County, spending roughly $625,000 in fiscal year 2019 alone.

A union representing employees at the Muscatine County jail and a national advocacy group for Muslims also sought Naylor’s removal.
