An Iowa City man was taken into custody Tuesday morning after an incident that occurred in a parking lot on Highway 1 West.
According to police, officers responded to a report of a man choking a woman in a lot on the 400 block of the highway. Upon arrival, witnesses confirmed that 27-year-old Zachary Washpun was behind the woman and had his arm around her neck, choking her as he was pulling around her purse with the other arm. The woman was reportedly coughing after the incident.
Investigating officers determined that the two live together and share a child.
Washpun was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault impeding airflow, and 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to a maximum of three years in prison.
