Governor closes IA schools for rest of year as COVID 19 cases top 2300

Governor Kim Reynolds has announced that she’s recommending that all Iowa schools remain closed for the rest of the year.

At her news conference Friday, the governor also suggested that the schools stay on their continuous learning programs that were submitted to the state earlier this month.

Reynolds also announced that spring sports have been cancelled, including soccer, golf, tennis and track & field. There’s no word on whether summer sports will follow suit.

The Iowa Department of Public Health on Friday announced that cases of COVID -19 have topped 2300.

191 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, for a total of 2,332 cases in the state. 64 people have been confirmed dead due to the virus. The four casualties added Thursday came from Blackhawk, Scott, Washington and Tama counties.

Linn County has surpassed 300 cases, with 309, followed by Polk with 277; Johnson County is now up to 246.

The recovery rate is now 43%, with 1007 of the confirmed cases either recovered or recovering
