Transient accused of breaking ex girlfriend’s toe with baseball bat

An Iowa City transient was taken into custody after being accused of breaking a woman’s toe with a baseball bat Wednesday.
According to police, they were dispatched to the area under the Gilbert Street bridge when a woman ran in front of a car on Gilbert, screaming “I need a cop!” and then returned to the area under the bridge.
When officers arrived to investigate, they located the female, who said that 32-year-old Jonathan Mitchell had broken her toe with a baseball bat. They attempted to interview Mitchell, but he denied hitting the woman. She continued to allege that Mitchell hit her.
Mitchell said that the two had lived together in his structure but he was kicking her out.
Police say after talking attempts failed, they told Mitchell he was going to be arrested for domestic abuse assault. Mitchell reportedly resisted and had to be tased, and had to be forcefully placed into the squad car.
Mitchell had a previous warrant for assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.
He was additionally charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all three counts, Mitchell could be sentenced to over two years in prison.
