Coralville FD battles Tuesday duplex blaze

The Coralville Fire Department battled a duplex blaze Tuesday morning.
According to a press release, firefighters repsonded to the call at 10:00 am at 1900 North Ridge Drive.
The side of the duplex where the fire was reported suffered heavy fire and smoke damage throughout the unit, while the connected residence at 1902 North Ridge Drive sustained light fire and smoke damage.
Chief Orey Schwitzer says that the fire was under control in about 30 minutes and completely extinguished in 45 minutes.
Four occupants of the duplex were home at the time of the blaze; they were able to safely escape. The residence had several pets, of which two perished.
The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious, but is still under investigation. Initial damage estimates are in the $175,000 range.
Displaced occupants are being assisted by community members.
