Early Sunday accident in Cedar Rapids sends man to hospital

A single-vehicle accident in the early hours of Sunday sent an unidentified 21 year-old man to the hospital.
According to a release from Public Safety Communications Coordinator Gerg Buelow, Cedar Rapids police and firefighters were dispatched to the Kirkwood Recreation Center at 1:26 AM after a vehicle had struck a brick wall.
Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle left the road and crashed into an 8-foot concrete block wall surrounding a transformer adjacent to the Kirkwood Recreation Center. The responders had to extricate the man from the vehicle, and he was transported to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital with serious injuries. The vehicle suffered significant front end damage, and the driver’s condition has not been released. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The accident remains under investigation.
