An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after a domestic incident Thursday.
According to arrest reports, officers were called to the Beach View Drive home of 34-year-old Omar Avila on reports of a male and female fighting. Upon arrival, the officer met with the victim, who with the another officer’s translating efforts was able to get details on what had occurred.
The woman said that she had been kicked out of the house by her husband, with whom they have two children together, and had returned around 3pm to get some of her things. Avila said that he told the woman to leave, then allegedly picked her up to remove her from the residence.
The woman said that Avila removed her by pulling her by the hair and had shut the door on her hands, causing a small laceration.
Avila was taken into custody and charged with domestic assault causing injury first offense, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
