An Iowa City transient faces three charges of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse after an alleged incident on a Coralville Transit bus Thursday afternoon .
According to reports, 32-year-old Mathusela Sugarlump Gibson Jr. was able to persuade a woman to get on the bus with him around 2pm after instructing her what bus to get onto to get to the Coralville Walmart.
Once on the bus, Gibson is accused of groping the woman’s chest area despite her requests for him to stop. He stated to the victim, “we’re going to have sex.”
Gibson also allegedly grabbed the woman’s hand and attempted to put it on his groin area, and is additionally accused of grabbing her neck and forcing her to kiss him on the lips.
Officers investigating the incident say Gibson smelled strongly of alcohol, had watery eyes, and slurred speech. He allegedly admitted to drinking earlier in the day. He refused a PBT.
Gibson was taken into custody and charged with three counts of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, and public intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to over six years in prison. A no-contact order was requested between the two parties.
Gibson was arrested on February 26th of this year at the Coach’s Corner in Iowa City at 12:20am after arriving police came upon him yelling at another man. He was eventually escorted outside, allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, and had excited emotions. Gibson, who stands 4′ 6″ according to police records, was reportedly upset that the other man called him “a midget” and refused to calm down. In that case, he was charged with Public Intoxication, found guilty and given credit for time served.
