The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is getting their hand sanitzer from just down the road, as the UI College of Pharmacy has gone into the production business.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Dean Don Letendre began research on how to make the sanitizer, then configured available equipment to safely produce the product.
Using a formula provided by the World Health Organization, the school has already made 380 liters of the 80% alcohol-mixture sanitizer.
UI Pharmaceutical Director Dennis Erb and Director of Business Development Randall Yeates say they will make as many batches as needed, and they’re giving the production their full attention.
It takes about four hours to make and bottle a batch of 95 liters of the sanitizer; the UIHC is compensating the College of Pharmacy for the materials and labor.
