An Iowa City man faces the possiblity of a long prison term after a domestic incident at the home he shares with a woman and two of his children.
Police reports indicate that officers were in the 2600 block of Roberts Road on an unrelated call just after midnight on Wednesday when they were contacted by 34-year-old Martel McCarty outside an apartment building.
He allegedly told them that he was going to jail for what happened in their apartment.
Officers contacted the woman, who stated that McCarty pushed one child’s head into the other’s because they were whispering, then forcefully grabbed one of the children by the face.
When the mother tried to intervene, McCarty allegedly dragged her out of the room and struck her several times with a closed fist. He then reportedly placed both hands around her throat in a choking action, but she was eventually able to get away.
The woman told police that she was afraid for her life and the lives of her children, and worried that McCarty would return to do them more harm.
