A Rock Island Illinois man who was arrested on a warrant last week was charged with bringing marijuana into the Johnson County Jail.
Police say the warrant for 21-year-old Shadarake Niyonkuru stems from an incident at Video Games Etc in Coralville in July of 2018. He’s accused of asking to see two I-phones at the store and sprinting out of the store with them when the store clerk wasn’t looking. With the total value of the two phones at $1400, Niyonkuru was charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class D felony.
Niyonkuru was arrested Friday at around 5pm on the warrant, and taken to the Johnson County Jail. Before entering the facility, he allegedly smelled of marijuana, he was asked if he had any contraband on his person, to which Niyonkuru reportedly said “no.” However, jailers discovered a clear plastic bag of marijuana hidden in his groin area. Niyonkuru allegedly told staff that it was his personal use marijuana.
Niyonkuru was additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance and introduction of drugs into an institution. If convicted on all counts, he could now be sentenced to a total of eleven years in prison.
