Iowa City’s mayor has declared a Civil Emergency due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The proclamation was signed by Bruce Teague Wednesday afternoon, and gives him additional measures to maintain health, welfare and safety in the city.
Part of the proclamation gives the Iowa City Police the power to enforce the governor’s State of Emergency orders, which includes the closing of bars and restaurants with the exception of delivery and to-go services, theatres, event spaces, and the banning of all gatherings of over 10 people.
The proclamation also gives city manager Geoff Fruin the power to purchase or lease goods and services related to COVID-19 prevention measures without going through the usual competitive procurement procedures.
Mayor Teague’s proclamation follows the State of Iowa and Johnson County’s similar declarations. Details on the proclamation are available at www.icgov.org.
