A Hills man was taken into custody late Sunday night after an alleged domestic incident in Iowa City.
According to police, officers were called to the 100 block of Clapp Street for reports of a domestic occurrence. Upon arrival, officers found the victim in her car sitting outside the residence. She approached the officers and they reportedly noticed a visible knot on the woman’s forehead.
The woman stated that 35-year-old Joshua Simmons of East Main Street in Hills took her purse. She believed it to be a “power move” as her phone was inside the bag. The woman said she attempted to get the purse back and a struggle ensued.
During the alleged altercation, Simmons is accused of punching the woman in the forehead causing the knot. The woman explained that the incident had happened the day before, and that’s when Simmons allegedly got upset, telling officers nothing happened.
Police took Simmons into custody; a check of his records showed a conviction for Domestic Abuse Assault in September of 2016. He was charged with a second offense, which is an aggravated misdemeanor. If convicted on the charge, Simmons could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.
