Today’s the last day of class for the Iowa City Community School District before next week’s spring break, and district officials say they will announce by Thursday March 19th whether they feel the need to cancel classes in light of the coronavirus pandemic. In a letter to district families and guardians, they announced that parents have the right to keep children at home if they feel it is in the best interest of their student’s health.
The Iowa City Press Citizen reports that some of the factors being considered include missed curriculum and food insecurity among students who depend on the district for its food service.
School board president Janet Godwin says the district is considering online options.
Iowa City and Clear Creek Amana schools say they will factor in the advice of the state Department of Public Health and Johnson County Public Health before they make any decision. Solon school administrators say they won’t close unless directed to do so by the Department of Public Health or Governor Reynolds.
