A Coralville man was taken into custody Tuesday after an alleged domestic incident with his live-in girlfriend of two years.

According to police, 21-year-old Riley McLaughlin-Chihak of 9th Street and the woman were arguing just after 9:30am. She moved to walk past McLaughlin-Chihak but he reportedly stood up, put both hands around the woman’s neck and squeezed. She was able to escape his grasp and ran to the bedroom, telling him she was going to call the police.

McLaughlin-Chihak then allegedly pushed his girlfriend to the floor, wrestled the phone out of her hand, put his hand around her neck and squeezed while holding her to the floor. He’s also accused of biting her on the arm and punching the dog that was barking at both of them.

The woman complained of pain on her forearms, and was observed with a split and swollen upper lip. She also had red marks on her neck and right forearm.

McLaughlin-Chihak was arrested and faces charges of Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow, Domestic Assault Causing Injury, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over seven years in prison.

A no-contact order was requested between the two parties.
