An Iowa City man faces drug charges after a traffic stop turned up marijuana and prescription meds.

Police stopped 27-year-old Jacob Welch of Plum Street on Monday at around 9:45pm near the intersection of Spruce Street and Lower Muscatine Road for a non-functioning license plate light. The officer reports that he came upon the smell of fresh marijuana when he made contact with Welch. He allegedly admitted to having about 7 grams of loose marijuana in his coat pocket and a marijuana pipe in his backpack.

A subsequent search of the backpack reportedly turned up more than the pipe; police alleged Welch also had another three grams of loose marijuana, a grinder, a small circular container containing a pill and a half of Adderall, and a prescription bottle with another 19 Adderall pills that didn’t belong to Welch.

He was taken into custody, and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, Marijuana Possession, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on the charges, Welch could be sentenced to a maximum total of 37 months in prison.
