A Marion man arrested for Operating While Intoxicated is also accused of assaulting a police officer after he was released from jail.

According to arrest records, 66-year-old Ricky Thompson of 7th Street was stopped by Iowa City Police around 12:30 Sunday morning for turning his Dodge Caliber into the oncoming lane of traffic when going from westbound Iowa Avenue to northbound Dubuque Street. He allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, had a blood alcohol content of .121 and was arrested for OWI.

Just after 4:45 Sunday morning Thompson was signed out of the Johnson County Jail by a friend. A short time later a sheriff’s deputy noticed the friend walking away from Thompson near the intersection of Harrison and Madison Streets, with Thompson yelling and appearing to be unsteady on his feet.

The deputy caught up to Thompson near the corner of Capitol and Washington Streets, where he allegedly showed signs of intoxication and smelled of ingested alcohol. Arrest records indicate the deputy had to take Thompson to the ground by force, and he spit at an officer during his arrest for Public Intoxication.

Thompson now faces additional charges of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 26 months in jail.
