One person was hospitalized and another placed under arrest after an early morning brawl on the Ped Mall.
Iowa City Police were called to a fight between Brother’s and The Union Bar at 1:51 Sunday morning. An investigation determined that during the fight 23-year-old Antoine Sykes of Washington, Iowa had sucker-punched another male, causing serious injury. The victim was taken to a local hospital and required stitches.
Sykes allegedly resisted arrest, refusing to put his hands behind his back for handcuffing. Officers had to subdue Sykes by force, including the use of pepper spray. One officer was injured in the process.
Police say Sykes showed multiple signs of intoxication. He’s charged with Assault Causing Serious Injury, Interference with Official Acts Causing Bodily Injury, Disorderly Conduct, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, Sykes faces a maximum of over six years in prison.
