Singing and dancing while driving past an Iowa State Patrol trooper has led to a Cedar Rapids man’s arrest.

In his arrest report, the trooper said he was northbound in the right lane of Interstate 380 about a half-mile north of I-80 when he was passed by a BMW sedan just after 5:30 Saturday night. The driver and a male passenger appeared to be singing and dancing in the vehicle while waving their arms in the air, with the driver wearing what appeared to be a bar wristband. The vehicle was reportedly driving 81 miles per hour in a 55 mile-per-hour construction zone, changing lanes without using a turn signal, and passing one car on the right.

The trooper conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the BMW, identified as 30-year-old Michael Brooks of 19th Street Northeast, reportedly showed multiple signs of intoxication. He said he’d consumed three beers at Big Grove Brewery on South Gilbert Street, and his last drink had been around 5pm.

The trooper says Brooks failed field sobriety tests, and his blood alcohol content was measured at .138% at 7:30pm. Brooks is charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving and Speeding.
