The former mayor of University Heights says he’s being monitored by the county health department for coronavirus after he took a month-long cruise to east Asia.
Wally Heitman tells the Press-Citizen that due to fears of contagion, the cruise was turned away from docking ports in four different countries before finally being allowed to disembark on Valentines Day in Cambodia. No one on the ship had tested positive for the illness, but a passenger tested positive after disembarking but was cleared after several days of treatment.
Heitman says the Johnson County Department of Public Health is having him report his temperature via text twice daily and asked to report if he experiences any symptoms.
Sam Jarvis is the Johnson County community health manager. He tells the paper that county and state officials are in regular contact with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention about people who have either traveled to infected regions or may have come in contact with an infected person.
Jarvis says the risk here is very low for coronavirus and the main concern continues to be influenza.
