An Iowa City drunk driving suspect is accused of eating marijuana he’d been hiding in his underwear.
20-year-old Saivon Lester of Benton Drive was arrested by Iowa City Police just after 8:30 Tuesday night after a traffic stop on the 1900 block of Boyrum Street. According to arrest records, Lester caught the attention of police by failing to stop at a stop sign at the corner of Sandusky Drive and Davis Street. He allegedly committed multiple other traffic violations before being pulled over, and had a burnt-out license plate light.
Investigators say Lester showed multiple signs of intoxication, had an open container of alcohol and a marijuana blunt inside the vehicle, smelled of burnt marijuana, and admitted to smoking marijuana 30 minutes prior to driving. His blood alcohol content was measured below the legal limit for driving, but a drug recognition expert determined he was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Lester was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated. While being booked at the Johnson County Jail, he allegedly removed a small bag of marijuana from his underwear and ate it. Police say Lester had been warned about introducing illegal drugs into the facility. He now faces an additional charge of Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Facility, a Class D felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.
