IC man arrested after allegedly robbing man at Staples

An Iowa City man was taken into custody after an alleged robbery outside an office supply store.

According to police, they were dispatched to the Staples on South Riverside Drive on Monday evening around 7:30 on reports of a robbery. According to the victim, a man identified as 39-year-old Douglas McCurn approached him as he was going to his vehicle, grabbed him by the collar and pressed his fist against his neck, pinning him against his vehicle.

McCurn reportedly demanded items from the victim, reached into his pocket and took his cell phone. The phone was in a case that also contained the man’s ID, cash, and a credit card.

McCurn was located near the Iowa City Walmart and allegedly had the stolen items on him. He was positively identified as the person who committed the robbery.

McCurn was taken into custody and charged with 3rd Degree Theft and 2nd Degree Robbery. If convicted on both charges, he could be sentenced to up to twelve years in prison.
