An Iowa City transient has been arrested after allegedly harassing a woman who has a no-contact order against him.
43-year-old Demetrius Jones was served a protective order in November, but reportedly called the victim twice, showed up at the woman’s residence twice, and began yelling things at her. She told police she became annoyed with Jones and asked him to stop contacting her, but because he ignored her request she contacted them.
Police say Jones had already fled on foot by the time they arrived at the woman’s residence at 9pm Sunday. Using the phone number provided by the woman, police reportedly contacted Jones about an hour later and advised him not to bother the victim again. However, shortly after the phone conversation, an officer saw Jones at Town and Campus and called him over to talk to him. Instead, Jones allegedly ran into the complex and into an apartment.
Officers identified the apartment Jones fled to, and made contact with the actual attendant. After getting permission to enter, police called out to Jones to come out, but he refused. He was eventually found hiding in a closet behind a furnace and was taken into custody.
A post-arrest search of Jones allegedly turned up a small amount of marijuana. Jones reportedly said he using the drug to relieve stress.
He’s been charged with Possession of Marijuana, violation of a no-contact order, interference with official acts, and 3rd degree harassment. He also had a warrant on an outstanding failure-to-appear charge for violating a no-contact order.
If convicted on all counts, Jones could be sentenced to 15 months in jail.
