An early morning road rage incident in a McDonald’s drive-thru has led to the arrest of a University of Iowa student.

An Iowa City Police officer reported seeing the driver of a Honda CRV with Illinois plates involved in an altercation with another driver in the Riverside Drive McDonald’s drive-thru just after 4am Saturday. The officer reported that the driver, identified as 21-year-old Justin Thompson of East Burlington Street, was “obviously intoxicated”. Thompson also reportedly had an “impaired sense of time” and admitted to drinking.

Police say Thompson showed impairment on field sobriety tests, and his blood alcohol content was measured at .222…almost three times the legal limit for driving.

Thompson was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
