An Iowa City man has been arrested for possession after police investigated a report of a fight.
Officers were called to the 1000 block of East Washington Street Monday at 7pm on reports of a fight. Upon arrival, they came upon 23-year-old Michael Pennell of Douglass Street. He allegedly claimed that he had been engaged in a loud argument on his phone in the hallway.
During the course of identifying Pennell, it was discovered that he had an outstanding warrant from Linn County on a 5th degree Theft charge and he was arrested.
A search of his person allegedly discovered a small black bag in his front coat pocket. The small bag reportedly contained several smaller clear baggies, containing marijuana residue and another containing a substance appearing to be either crack cocaine or methamphetamine.
While being escorted to a squad car, Pennell is accused of flexing and pulling away from officers. He also allegedly had to be forced into the vehicle and is accused of kicking and banging in the back of the squad car.
Pennell has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd offense and Interference with Official Acts, and could be sentenced to over two years in prison if convicted.
