Iowa City Police conducted tobacco compliance checks on dozens of businesses this week, and only one failed by selling to a minor.

The ICPD conducted the checks from Wednesday to Friday at fifty-six businesses licensed to sell tobacco, alternative nicotine, or vapor products in the Iowa City city limits. Working with plainclothes officers, underage persons entered the businesses and attempted to illegally purchase the products.

Only one business checked by police sold to the underage buyers:

  • Almost Paradise – 355 S Linn St.

The employee who sold tobacco products to the underage buyers was charged with, “Employee Selling Tobacco to Persons Under Age 18.” An employee convicted of selling tobacco products to a minor is guilty of a simple misdemeanor, punishable with a $100 fine. Additionally, the violation may result in civil penalties against the tobacco license.
