A violent Thanksgiving guest has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

25-year-old Jasmine Cherry of South Governor Street was charged with 1st Degree Burglary, Assault Causing Bodily Injury, 5th Degree Criminal Mischief and Interference With Official Acts after Iowa City Police responded to a disturbance at 2482 Lakeside Drive just after 12:15am on November 29th. An investigation determined that Cherry had arrived at the apartment around 2pm the previous day as an invited guest for a Thanksgiving Day celebration. After ten hours, Cherry allegedly became belligerent and started harassing one of the attendees. The apartment’s residents asked Cherry to leave, but she refused, instead allegedly striking one of the hosts in the face causing bleeding to the victim’s mouth and a scratch to the cheek.

Cherry finally left, although as she was doing so she allegedly threw a brick through the family’s window, shattering it and causing approximately $250 in damage.

Police say Cherry resisted arrest, pulling her arms apart during handcuffing attempts, pulling away from officers and refusing to sit in the back of the patrol car.

If convicted on all charges, Cherry could have faced a maximum of over 26 years in prison. Instead, Cherry reached a plea deal with prosecutors, and earlier this week was given a two-year suspended sentence, a suspended fine and two years of probation on a 3rd Degree Burglary of a Motor Vehicle charge. All other charges were dropped.

Cherry was also arrested last October after refusing to return $754 in materials from the Iowa City Public Library. She reached a plea deal in that case as well earlier this week, and was ordered to perform community service.
