ICFD battles house fire

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a house fire early Thursday morning.

According to a release from the Department, an occupant of the home at 717 Giblin Drive was awakened by a smoke alarm at 4:40am and found fire throughout the home. The first fire engine arrived on scene within six minutes and reported fire showing from three sides of the residence.

It took less than 25 minutes to bring the fire under control, but the Fire Department estimates that the home and contents damage is about $140,000.

There were 12 occupants in the residence; they were able to escape the blaze safely and are being cared for by the American Red Cross. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. A total of eight different support agencies assisted with the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the city Fire Marshall.
