A Chicago man was taken into custody Friday after a high-speed interstate chase reportedly reached speeds of 130 miles per hour, according to police.

According to arrest reports, 26-year old James Cross was recorded on rear-facing radar hitting 81 miles an hour in a posted 55 mile per hour construction zone as he was heading Eastbound on I80 near the 241 mile marker at about 12:30am Friday. As the trooper attempted a traffic stop, Cross is accused of accelerating at a high rate of speed and a pursuit ensued.

Cross allegedly drove recklessly during the chase, reaching speeds of 130 miles an hour in his Kia and turning off his headlights. Cross reportedly took the West Branch exit off I-80 and continued south on Baker Avenue, where the pursuit was terminated.

Cedar County deputies caught up with Cross allegedly still driving at a high rate of speed north of West Liberty later in the evening and were able to stop him using spike strips.

Cross was charged with reckless driving and eluding at a high rate of speed; if convicted, he could be sentenced to over two years in prison.
