Coralville Police announced that tobacco compliance checks conducted earlier this week only found one business in violation of selling product to a minor.

In a release from the department, 26 businesses were given compliance checks on Tuesday, with 25 businesses refusing to sell tobacco products to a minor. The only business that did sell to a minor was the Walmart on Commerce Drive.

The employee who sold tobacco to a minor was cited for providing tobacco products, vapor or cigarettes to a person under the age of 18 as an employee of a business holding a tobacco license. It’s a simple misdemeanor punishable by a first-offense fine of up to $300. If a business commits three violations within three years, their retail sales permit will be suspended for up to 30 days and multiple violations can result in having the retailer’s permit revoked.
