Thousands of students across the state participated in the Iowa Youth Straw Poll on Tuesday, and although the Republican winner was a foregone conclusion, the Democratic candidate who emerged on top was a bit of a surprise.

According to Secretary of State Paul Pate’s office, who organized the event, it was Andrew Yang who got the majority of the votes, with 3370 votes as of 4:30 yesterday afternoon. Close behind was Bernie Sanders, with Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden farther behind in third and fourth.

Donald Trump easily beat the other Republican candidates, Joe Walsh and Bill Weld.

The majority of students who participated indicated that they’d register to vote when they’re old enough.

Friday on the University of Iowa campus, the Hawk the Vote student organization will be holding a mock caucus at the IMU Main Lounge starting at 7pm. An open house will start a half hour earlier, enabling campaign organizers to talk with students about their candidate. The organization is in its first year and its goal is to advance voter registration and turnout among students.
