Local man arrested for taking mother’s vehicle without consent

A local man has been arrested after his own mother turned him in for taking her vehicle without permission.

According to police, 23-year-old Cordero Bertling, address not given, allegedly took his mother’s 2003 Honda Pilot the afternoon of January 17th without her permission. She went to the ICPD to file a stolen vehicle report.

Bertling, in the meantime, had already been pulled over for a traffic violation was arrested for driving on a barred license. Because the vehicle had not been reported stolen, it was parked in a nearby parking lot instead of impounded.

Police say that after Bertling was released from jail, he allegedly continued to drive the vehicle for another nine hours before he relinquished it to his sister in the parking lot of the Coralville Walmart.

A warrant was issued on the 19th and Bertling was picked up on Tuesday morning; he’s been charged with operating a vehicle without consent, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years.
