A Chicagoland man was taken into custody over the weekend after police say he assaulted two people in downtown Iowa City and later tried to pick a fight in a convenience store.

According to arrest reports, 20 year-old Matthew Korinek of Round Lake Illinois bumped into an individual in the intersection of Burlington and Gilbert Streets Friday night around 9:45. Korinek and the other person exchanged words, at which point Korinek is accused of turning around and punching the person in the face. He also is accused of striking one of the person’s friends. Several witnesses corroborated the incident.

About a half hour later, Korinek was at the Kum and Go at 323 East Burlington, and was observed by officers trying to start a fight with another patron. When confronted, Korinek allegedly cursed at the officer and ran away.  The officer told him to stop and as he exited the store, Korinek had turned around and was walking toward the officer.

Korinek allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, smelled of ingested alcohol and stumbled as he walked. He refused a PBT.

Korinek was charged with public intoxication, interference with official acts, and assault causing bodily injury. If convicted on the charges, he could be sentenced to up to 14 months in jail.
