An Iowa City man has been arrested for a December incident when he and an unidentified juvenile stole a wallet and charged items on a credit card found inside.
According to police, they were taking 18-year-old Orin Cantu of Dolen Place into custody at noon on December 9th on car burglary charges. As they were transporting him to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Cantu allegedly dropped a credit card onto the floor of the police vehicle.
After a search of Cantu, an Iowa drivers license matching the name on the card was discovered. Officers contacted the victim, and he told them that his wallet was stolen while he was at Biotest earlier that day. He also informed officers of unauthorized charges on the credit card he kept in the wallet.
A video obtained from Biotest reportedly identified Cantu and a juvenile female taking the wallet after it had fallen out of his pocket. Further video from Kum & Go showed Cantu and the juvenile using the card.
Cantu was taken into custody Wednesday night and charged with 3rd degree Burglary, using a juvenile to commit certain offenses, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, 5th degree theft, and unauthorized use of a credit card under $1000. If convicted on all charges, Cantu could be sentenced to over twelve years in prison.
