The Iowa legsislature is advancing a bill that would outlaw vaping in public places, and make it illegal for those under 21.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that backers of the legislation say they’re trying to keep people safe, as well as protecting federal grants by lining up with federal law, which bans tobacco and vaping products for those under 21.
Officials from the vaping industry argue that because their product is different than cigarettes, it shouldn’t be compared to second hand smoke laws that apply to tobacco products.
The vaping industry in Iowa would be hurt by the legislation, with one company, Central Iowa Vapors, facing cutbacks of their 11 stores and 75 employees.
The bill would take effect immediately if passed by the House and Senate once signed by the governor.
