An Iowa City woman faces charges that she punched a nine-year-old in the head and threw cooking oil on her roommate during a Friday night tirade at her residence.
Iowa City Police were called to 915 Hudson Avenue just after 9:45 Friday night for an assault. An investigation determined that 27-year-old Virgie Cooks, who lives at the residence, had entered her roommate’s room and punched him multiple times in the face. The man was able to push Cooks out of the room, but she allegedly kicked down the door and began punching him again and scratching him.
Police say the man tried hiding behind another door, but Cooks damaged it as well. She also allegedly threw pots of cooled cooking oil on him.
Cooks then allegedly punched the man’s nine-year-old child in the head.
The man was able to get Cooks outside and lock her out, but she allegedly punched out a window before officers could arrive. Police say she showed signs of intoxication, and an initial portable Breathalyzer test showed her blood alcohol content at .115. She was cleared from the hospital and taken to jail, where her BAC was recorded at .209 two hours after initial contact with police.
Cooks is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Assault, 4th Degree Criminal Mischief and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of 26 months in prison.
