An overnight fire heavily damaged a house on Iowa City’s north side.
According to a news release from the Iowa City Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to 1920 Prairie du Chien Road at 1:51am Friday. A person traveling on Interstate 80 reported that a house was on fire somewhere in the vicinity of the Prairie Du Chien Road bridge. The first fire unit arrived within eight minutes and reported heavy fire showing from the east side of the house.
Fire crews were not able to enter the structure due to heavy fire conditions and building collapse. The sole occupant had exited the structure prior to the fire department’s arrival. The fire was brought under control approximately 90 minutes after arrival.
The fire suppression required mutual aid from fire departments in North Liberty, Coralville, Solon and West Branch, and off-duty fire department personnel were called back to staff fire stations while on-duty crews extinguished the fire.
No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Total property damage is estimated to be $260,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the ICFD Fire Marshal.
