A West Liberty man has pleaded guilty in a case that alleges he sexually assaulted a woman in a cornfield near Iowa City.
35-year-old Andrew Wilson was initially charged with 1st Degree Kidnapping and 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse. On Friday he entered a guilty plea, and Judge Lars Anderson set a sentencing date of January 24th.
Police say Wilson met the alleged victim at a bar in downtown Iowa City on September 29th, 2018 and offered her a ride home. But Wilson instead allegedly drove the woman to a cornfield off Fountain Court – south of the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area – and struck the woman in the face and choked her. When the woman struggled against him, Wilson allegedly said he would continue the assault as long as she did so.
He then allegedly raped her and left her unconscious and nearly naked in the cornfield. She eventually came to and ran to a nearby house to report the incident.
The kidnapping charge is a class A felony carrying a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole, while the sexual abuse charge is a class B felony carrying up to 25 years in prison.
Terms of the plea deal have not been released.
