North Liberty Police say a man choked the mother of his child to the point she thought she was going to die.
Officers were dispatched to a residence on Sugar Creek Lane just before 9:30 Tuesday morning for a report of a domestic assault and a vehicle theft. They learned the residents have been in a three-year relationship and have one child with another on the way.
The woman in the relationship, who is nine months pregnant, told police the father of her child, 33-year-old Justin Anderson, had become aggressive around 1am when she asked him to leave. He then allegedly choked her with his hands.
Just before 9:30am she again asked Anderson to leave. He allegedly responded by scratching her chest and choking her from behind with what she described as “a figure four headlock”. The woman reported having trouble breathing, saying she thought she was going to die. She also claims Anderson threatened to kill her.
Investigators say the woman had minor injuries around her neck area consistent with her version of events, although she did not report any pain.
Anderson was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury and Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of four years in prison.
