Allegedly stabbing a victim seven times under the Benton Street Bridge has led to a Des Moines man’s arrest.
Iowa City Police say 18-year-old Jeremiah Banks of Hubbell Avenue was involved in an altercation with another subject under the bridge over the Iowa River just after 10:15 Tuesday night. Banks then allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the other man seven times, including in his side under the left arm and once under the right arm. Police say Banks admitted to stabbing the man, and the bloody knife was found in his possession.
Banks allegedly gave the false name of “Jeremiah L. Bell” and claimed to be 27 years old when questioned by police. Police say he then gave a birthdate of August 6th, 2000, and advised he’d lived in Marshalltown before moving to Iowa City. Marshalltown Police were eventually able to provide Banks’ correct date of birth.
Arrest records indicate it took approximately 90 minutes to determine Banks’ identity.
Banks is charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Going Armed With Intent and Harassment of a Public Official. If convicted on all charges, he faces maximum of over ten years in prison.
